Flat Stanley in NYC Part 4
When we last saw Stanley he was visiting the different sites in NYC showing us how things are different there during the pandemic. Just as a reminder from our first article; Mrs. Murphy’s class at VPA created this Flat Stanley and sent him to Michael Conwill in New York City right before the schools went on the extended break. Flat Stanley saw bridges!
New York City is very big in size and people. It’s the biggest city in the United States.
New York City is in five big parts, like if you took five cities and put them all together into one big city. There are two parts that are on their own islands. They are named Manhattan and Staten Island. Two other parts are on another big island called Long Island and those two parts are named Brooklyn and Queens. And the fifth part is named The Bronx. At first New York City was only the part on Manhattan Island and Brooklyn was another big city. Then later these two cities and the other places next to them joined up to be one big city.
You have to cross the East River to get to Brooklyn or Queens or The Bronx. (It’s really called The Bronx, not just Bronx. Sometimes people get used to saying something like that and it sticks!) You can go across the River by bridges or by boats, or you can go across it by trains that run on some of the bridges or go under the river in a tunnel.
The first bridge to be built between Manhattan and Brooklyn is very famous. It’s called the Brooklyn Bridge.
Brooklyn is on the left side of this picture and Manhattan is on the right side. In the middle is another island called Governors Island that is now one big park. It’s also part of New York City, and there are lots more smaller islands that are also part of the city. Flat Stanley didn’t get to visit there, but it looks like this. At the right side of this picture you can see the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.
Later another bridge was built and it’s called the Manhattan Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge is behind it in this picture. They both go between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

On the Manhattan side there’s a highway that runs along the East River that is up above the ground. So underneath is more park space for people to walk and run and ride bicycles. The underside of the highway is painted purple! Can you see the purple highway in any of the other pictures?
