Space Day

Third graders at Marion Math, Science & Technology Magnet have been immersing themselves in the wonders of space during their second module in literacy class.

Their journey began with reading a variety of texts from Galileo Galilei to Moonshot, where they learned about the historic Apollo 11 mission. Building on this knowledge, the students integrated their learnings into science class by creating moon phases using Oreos, while also exploring the scientific challenges the Apollo 11 astronauts faced and how the moon landing was achieved.

To culminate their space exploration, the students participated in a thrilling Space Day event. Dressed in astronaut suits, they stepped into an out-of-this-world experience right in their own classrooms.

The day was highlighted by presentations from two NASA experts. The first speaker, Tiffany Comeaux, an attorney-advisor for NASA, shared insights into her career and introduced the students to the "Artemis" Generation — the next wave of explorers that NASA is preparing for future space missions. She also expressed the importance of women in STEM-related professions.

Space DayNext, Kenneth Clark, a staff engineer at Axiom Space with over 12 years of experience, spoke about his role in designing the next space suit for upcoming space missions. His work involves collaborating with well-known brands like Prada, Nike, and Oakley. Crystal Lister, a NASA educator, joined Clark and brought along a special guest — a space bug named "Ro-Ro," a friendly roach that fascinated the students. Lister also conducted a hands-on experiment where students observed gas mixed with bubbles and ignited to create a small, controlled fire, adding an exciting and interactive element to the day.

Later in the day, the students entered a rocket ship-themed entrance that led to their transformed classroom. They then rotated through a series of space-themed activities, including creating star constellations using pretzels and marshmallows, taking a virtual tour of mission control, engaging in descriptive writing with a viewfinder, and tackling a Mars escape room challenge.
