Oftentimes, coaches of athletic teams refer to practice or training as “boot camp.”
Marion High School teacher and girls soccer coach Chris Paslay got a hint of real-life boot camp this summer.
Paslay spent a week in July at the Marine Corps Educators Workshop in San Diego, Calif. The workshop only accepted 60 educators from five states, and is aimed at deepening the understanding of Marine Corps history, culture, and educational opportunities.
“This week with the Marine Corps brought out an entirely new level of respect for the young men and women who volunteer to become Marines,” Paslay said. “It was the most impactful week of my professional life.”
While he was in San Diego, Paslay engaged in a variety of activities designed to provide firsthand insight into the life and responsibilities of Marines. Paslay took part in live fire exercises at the firing range, combat fitness testing, rappelling exercises, and leadership and problem-solving activities.
Paslay also witnessed Marine Corps traditions and ceremonies, such as an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor ceremony, as well as a Delta Company Boot Camp graduation. He also attended captivating demonstrations like a K-9 display, and a water survival demonstration.
Paslay said it was important to take part in the workshop because it underscores the Marion School District’s commitment to equipping educators with firsthand knowledge to better guide students into future careers.
